When buyers start searching for a home in Calgary, many begin with the same familiar list of communities, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Calgary’s best-known neighbourhoods are popular for good reason.
But one of the most valuable parts of the home search can be discovering a community that wasn’t originally on your list at all.
The best community isn’t always the newest one, the trendiest one or the most expensive one. It’s the one that fits your lifestyle.
As we look ahead to 2027, here are 12 Calgary neighbourhoods and areas I think buyers should consider expanding their search to.
Currie Barracks: Modern Living in an Established Part of the City
Currie Barracks offers an unusual combination in Calgary: newer housing and master-planned development within an established, central part of the city.
The former military lands have evolved into a mix of detached homes, townhomes, condos, green spaces and mixed-use development, while still retaining elements of the area's history. Development also continues, including current planning applications for additional mixed-use development.
For buyers who like the convenience of the inner southwest but would prefer newer construction and contemporary floorplans, Currie deserves a look.
Worth considering if: You like communities such as Altadore, Garrison Woods and Lakeview, but newer construction is high on your wish list.
West District: A Different Kind of West-Side Lifestyle
West District and the surrounding West Springs area offer something increasingly sought after on Calgary's west side: the opportunity for a more walkable, amenity-focused lifestyle without moving downtown.
Restaurants, shops, services and higher-density housing give buyers alternatives to the traditional large-lot suburban home.
It's an interesting option for professionals, downsizers and anyone who wants to remain on the west side but doesn't necessarily want to be right downtown.
Worth considering if: You want west-side living, proximity to the mountains and restaurants, with a more walkable lifestyle.
Bowness: Character, Location and a Community That Keeps Evolving
Bowness is one of those communities where two homes a few blocks apart can offer completely different experiences.
That's part of its charm.
Its mature trees, proximity to Bowness Park and the Bow River, local businesses and easy access west toward the mountains give it a character that's difficult to recreate in a new development.
At the same time, redevelopment continues to introduce newer housing alongside the community's original homes. Bowness remains one of Calgary's established northwest communities, but today's housing options can look very different from the Bowness buyers may remember from years ago.
Worth considering if: Character, mature surroundings, river access and getting out to the mountains matter more to you than having a uniform streetscape.
Parkhill: An Inner-City Community That's Easy to Overlook
Parkhill doesn't always receive the same attention as Mission, Altadore or Elbow Park, which is exactly why buyers shouldn't overlook it.
Its location provides convenient access to the inner city while retaining a quieter residential atmosphere. Housing ranges from older character properties to renovated homes, infills and luxury residences.
For someone who wants to be close to the action without necessarily living directly in it, Parkhill can offer an appealing balance. The community sits within Calgary's Ward 8 alongside many of the city's best-known inner-city neighbourhoods, including Mission, Altadore, Britannia, Mount Royal, Rideau, Roxboro, and Elbow Park.
Worth considering if: You want an inner-city address but prefer a quieter residential environment.
West Hillhurst & Parkdale: Inner City With River Access
West Hillhurst and Parkdale are particularly interesting for buyers who want to stay close to downtown while maintaining a strong residential neighbourhood feel.
West Hillhurst has excellent access to the Bow River park network and commercial areas along Kensington Road and 19 Street NW. Parkdale extends many of those same location advantages farther west, and both communities sit in a corridor that also provides convenient access to major employment and education centres in northwest Calgary.
The housing mix ranges from original homes to substantial renovations and contemporary infills.
Worth considering if: River pathways, inner-city access and the possibility of a newer infill home are high on your list.
Wildwood: Small Community, Big Lifestyle Advantage
Wildwood can be easy to miss simply because buyers may not see a large selection of homes there at any given time.
Located on Calgary's established west side, it offers mature surroundings and proximity to the Bow River valley and Edworthy Park while remaining relatively close to downtown. The City groups Wildwood among Calgary's established west-side communities in Ward 6.
Its appeal isn't necessarily about having restaurants and shops immediately outside your front door. It's more about location, mature lots, green space and access to the outdoors.
Worth considering if: You want an established west-side neighbourhood and value green space more than having the newest house. That said, you can find some stunning new infills here.
Oakridge: Don't Forget Calgary's Established Southwest
Not every buyer wants an infill or a brand-new suburban home.
Oakridge offers a completely different proposition: an established southwest community with mature surroundings and convenient access to some of southwest Calgary's major recreation areas.
For buyers spending weekends walking, cycling or enjoying Calgary's park system, the location near South Glenmore Park and the reservoir area can be particularly attractive.
Oakridge, Lakeview and Haysboro are all established southwest communities within Ward 11, making them worthwhile alternatives to compare with one another.
Worth considering if: You value mature landscaping, established streets and southwest Calgary more than brand-new construction.
Coach Hill & Strathcona Park: Established West Side Without Going Farther Out
It's easy for buyers looking west to immediately jump to Aspen Woods, West Springs or Springbank Hill.
But Coach Hill and Strathcona Park shouldn't be skipped.
These are established west-side communities with mature landscaping and convenient access both toward downtown and west out of the city.
The homes are generally older than you'll find in Calgary's newer west-side developments, which makes condition and renovation history important. But that can also create opportunities for buyers who care more about the location and lot than having a newly built home.
Worth considering if: You're committed to the west side and want a walkable lifestyle close to parks, coffee shops, schools, and friendly neighbours.
Inglewood & Ramsay: Choose the Lifestyle First
Few Calgary neighbourhoods demonstrate the importance of lifestyle fit better than Inglewood and Ramsay.
These communities have a distinct personality and offer a very different experience from suburban Calgary. Their proximity to the inner city, local businesses and established neighbourhood fabric attracts buyers who place a high value on character and location. Both communities sit together within Ward 9 and are also treated together in some City community and recreation planning.
The housing stock can vary significantly from one property to the next, which makes understanding the individual home particularly important.
Worth considering if: Character, neighbourhood personality and proximity to the inner city rank higher on your list than having a large newer suburban home.
Lakeview: An Established Community With an Exceptional Location
Lakeview is one I would absolutely add to the list for 2027.
It's an established southwest community that can appeal to buyers looking for mature streets and larger lots while remaining relatively central.
Its proximity to North Glenmore Park and the reservoir area is a significant lifestyle advantage, and Lakeview also has designated off-leash space within the community, another consideration for dog owners.
For someone initially considering inner southwest communities, Lakeview can be an interesting alternative that provides a different balance of house, lot and location.
Worth considering if: Parks, mature trees, outdoor recreation and an established southwest setting are priorities.
Haysboro & Kingsland: Established, Convenient and Often Overlooked
Haysboro & Kingsland are established communities that deserve more attention from buyers who aren't focused solely on newer construction.
Its southwest location provides access to major transportation routes and established amenities, while the communities offer the mature streets and housing character that come with an older neighbourhood. They're part of Ward 11 alongside communities including Lakeview, Oakridge, Chinook Park and Kelvin Grove.
It can be particularly interesting for buyers willing to prioritize location and lot over the age of the house.
Worth considering if: You want an established southwest location and aren't afraid of a home that may need updating but offers incredible well-built homes on big lots with mature trees.
Start With Your Lifestyle — Then Find the Neighbourhood
When I'm working with buyers, one of the most useful questions isn't:
"Which neighbourhood do you want to live in?"
It's
"What do you want your life to look like when you live there?"
- Do you want to walk for coffee on Saturday morning?
- Do you need to be downtown in 15 minutes?
- Would you rather have a renovated home or a larger lot?
- Do you want to be near the river pathways?
- Is getting west to the mountains every weekend important?
- Would you sacrifice square footage for walkability, or walkability for a backyard?
- Those answers can lead to very different communities.
That's why I encourage buyers not to begin their search with a rigid list of community names. Start with the life you want to have, the things you value most and the compromises you're willing to make.
Then find the Calgary neighbourhood that makes those things possible.
Thinking about buying a home in Calgary in 2027?
Whether you've already narrowed your search to a few communities or have no idea where to start, I can help you compare neighbourhoods based on your lifestyle, budget and priorities, including a few areas you may not have considered.
